International Women's Day at the IMP

International Women's Day at the IMP

As part of International Women’s Day, we are celebrating all of the inspiring and wonderful women involved in our IMP community.  Sofia is in Year 9 at UC High School in Kaleen and has been involved in the IMP programs since Year 5.

“I am currently in my school band playing the tenor saxophone, percussion ensemble, senior concert choir and senior concert band on percussion.”

“When I was really little, I had this CD, jazz versions of the Spiderman music and I would sit in front of the CD player and listen to it for hours on end.  My first musical experience was with the choir at Giralang Primary School and I then started playing piano in Year 2.  Since then, I have been playing and performing here there and everywhere.  I love being on stage under the lights, with people I know and making the audience happy by sharing our music.”

“I love the community that the IMP is.  There is so much support and inclusivity and we are all here for the purpose of making music together.  The IMP staff are incredible!  They have a great sense of humour and are just such great people.  They give us great music to play as well.”

“When I started in the school band, I was the only female percussionist.  When I moved up to the Primary Concert Band in the IMP, I was also the only female percussionist.  However, as we’ve gotten older, I can see there are now so many more female and gender diverse percussionist as well as a good gender balance across the full range of instruments.  I think the gender balance is incredible.”

“I believe that the 2024 IWD theme, 'Invest in Women - Accelerate Progress" is a call for all to help remove the barriers that stop women from achieving their aspirations. Every person has a goal, and women have every right to make a difference in society. By building opportunity through equal funding and investing in female-led businesses, we give every dream a chance, and the progress benefits us all as a gender equality-focussed society. We should all support the women in our lives to achieve their goals, be it to win their next match, ace their next test, make their next deal, or blow away their audience.”
