WELCOME TO THE ACT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM

The Instrumental Music Program (IMP) is a branch of the ACT Education Directorate and works with schools to provide quality music education through group instruction.  All IMP teachers are ACT Education Directorate teachers and work alongside schools to teach brass and woodwind bands (including percussion), ukulele groups, strings groups and high school concert bands.  The IMP also facilitates system extension ensemble opportunities for students across ACT schools who can participate in concert and jazz bands, percussion ensemble, string ensemble and choirs.

Instrumental Music Program Aims

  • To enhance the education of children through their involvement in a quality music program
  • To provide a strong motivation for children to continue to engage in music activities
  • To develop cooperative learning, social interaction, and performance skills
  • To develop in children an awareness and appreciation of many musical styles and genres
  • To develop instrumental and ensemble skills
  • To encourage children to strive for excellence
  • To provide the tools for positive experiences in ensemble musical performance to students at a young age.

International Women's Day at the IMP

As part of International Women’s Day, we are celebrating all of the inspiring and wonderful women involved in our IMP community.  Sofia is in Year 9 at UC High School in Kaleen and has been involved in the IMP programs since Year 5.

“I am currently in my school band playing the tenor saxophone, percussion ensemble, senior concert choir and senior concert band on percussion.”

“When I was really little, I had this CD, jazz versions of the Spiderman music and I would sit in front of the CD player and listen to it for hours on end.  My first musical experience was with the choir at Giralang Primary School and I then started playing piano in Year 2.  Since then, I have been playing and performing here there and everywhere.  I love being on stage under the lights, with people I know and making the audience happy by sharing our music.”

“I love the community that the IMP is.  There is so much support and inclusivity and we are all here for the purpose of making music together.  The IMP staff are incredible!  They have a great sense of humour and are just such great people.  They give us great music to play as well.”

“When I started in the school band, I was the only female percussionist.  When I moved up to the Primary Concert Band in the IMP, I was also the only female percussionist.  However, as we’ve gotten older, I can see there are now so many more female and gender diverse percussionist as well as a good gender balance across the full range of instruments.  I think the gender balance is incredible.”

“I believe that the 2024 IWD theme, 'Invest in Women - Accelerate Progress" is a call for all to help remove the barriers that stop women from achieving their aspirations. Every person has a goal, and women have every right to make a difference in society. By building opportunity through equal funding and investing in female-led businesses, we give every dream a chance, and the progress benefits us all as a gender equality-focussed society. We should all support the women in our lives to achieve their goals, be it to win their next match, ace their next test, make their next deal, or blow away their audience.”

Talking with the IMP team

Our teachers and IMP staff work hard every day to provide the best outcomes for every student.
Preparing for great teaching takes time. It is important that our teachers and IMP staff have time outside their core hours to rest and reset.  Communication with parents and carers is important to us and our staff will always work to get back to your enquiries within a reasonable timeframe. We aim to do this within 3 workings days. If your matter is urgent we will get back to you as quickly as possible. There is no expectation that teachers respond to queries from families during their personal and family time.

Every student and every family is important to us. By respecting the time of our teachers, you are helping to make time for great teaching.  We want to continue to work closely with you on your child’s learning through the IMP and do our best to respond to you in a timely manner.

We update families on what is happening at the IMP in a number of ways from information sessions and videos, emails, notes, newsletters, and social media. We encourage you to stay in touch with the IMP through these channels.

IMP System Ensembles Begin

All IMP system ensembles have kicked off 2024 with a bang.  Students representing all ACT public schools converse on the IMP rehearsal room at UC High School after school each week to take part in choirs, concert and jazz bands, string ensemble and percussion ensemble.  Our IMP students are working hard in preparing new repertoire for a busy year of performances.  We look forward to sharing our music with parents, carers and the broader community throughout 2024!
